JoJo's Bizarre Adventure(2012): Episodes 1-9 Discussion

The first 9 episodes adapt the first 44 chapters of the manga, and is labeled Part 1: Phantom Blood, and is about the Joestar family, and the conflict between Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando.

In the first episode itself we are immediately introduced to our main characters, and the conflict between them is establshed. The premise is pretty simple, Dio wants to inherit the properties of the Joestar family by getting rid of Jonathan and his father, George. They establish the conflict pretty well, with Dio doing every possible thing to isolate Jonathan. What's weird is that Dio sort of abruptly stops his assault after their brawl in the mansion. Skip to 7 years and they both get along, with Dio secret poisoning his father. When Jonathan discovers this, he sets out to prove it, and after that the story is mainly about the mask, and Dio trying to conquer the world, and trying to kill Jonathan, with the manga introducing techniques such as Hamon. Both Dio and Jonathan die in the end.

Jonathan I guess is your typical 80's Jump protagonist, noble, chivalrous, and really huge. And what everyone said about him being similar to Kenshiro did ring true to me. Though I didn't find him to be 'boring' or 'dull', I really appreciated what he became after those 7 years. Coming to Dio, that's one of the most insane voice performances I've ever seen(only matched by Joseph's VA in Battle Tendency). And I finally got what this meme was all about:

The story itself was sorta generic for sure. It's kinda apparent that Araki didn't really plan it well at this point in time. And the fight scenes themselves were fine, nothing special, though the artwork is something, that's for sure. The characters can be cliched and one-note though, none of them are layered. Dio is, in the end, a very evil guy, Jonathan is the good, noble guy, and Erina is the damsel in distress. But it was an enjoyable ride for sure due to its fast-paced nature and its weirdness.

Coming to the OP, I loved it. It was incredible. The characters in the manga panel moving reminded me of FLCL. And the fact that the OP looked so good even though it was in CG surprised me. It was also unapologetically manly, just like the episodes themselves, which was refreshing, and different from the teenage protagonists you see in Jump manga from the last two decades. The curious thing about the OP is that it sort of spoils a lot of things when you pay attention, JoJo's father dying, Dio becoming something supernatural, Jonathan learning Hamon, etc.

What did you guys think of these episodes?

" Justice is subject to dispute; might is easily recognized and is not disputed. So we cannot give might to justice, because might has gainsaid justice, and has declared that it is she herself who is just. And thus, being unable to make what is just strong, we have made what is strong just."

I already started it on October 1. I was planning to watch the entire series from October for quite some time.

The OP is dope, one of my favorite ones. The visuals match the song pretty well, and the song is brilliant : D

The plot and characters are silly, absolutely. I watched it as a comedy though. The part where Jonathan goes to London and meet the "thugs" lead by Speedwagon - I enjoyed that nonsense a lot  Angel It is kinda the right mix for me, lots of drama right next to absurd things like a top hat with blades in its rim, I like that =)

Where did the 9th episode ended?

Really? Within the first four parts, or by the anime community externally? And by the way, Part 5 started today. Planning to watch it or waiting for the dub?

I also liked it a lot, not denying that. But you can't deny that they behave more like characters from a play written a few centuries ago. Everything, right from the way they speak. I'm half way through Battle Tendency now, and that's definitely more insane. Though the only disappointing thing is the OP, while the music is good and the visuals are also cool(though not as good as Sono Chi no Sadame), the vocal is like really dull, totally in contrast with Joseph's explosive personality.

9th episode exactly wrapped up part 1, with Jonathan and Dio dying, and a pregnant Erina escaping the boat with the toddler.

Exactly! JoJo is like a theater play. That stuff is totally up my valley though : D Baccano, JoJo, Hokuto no Ken, that is one of the reasons I enjoyed them so much, they use this exaggerated and dramatic theater-like performance that sort of lets you know that the story doesn't take itself seriously, even though the characters are dead serious. Hard to explain exactly ^^'

So you also seen the "vampire was hiding in the horse" part? : D And the severed head that spit out a rose into Dio's eye? When I was watching it I was also listening to Fast Karate for the Gentleman podcast, which was doing reactions/discussions on every few episodes. I don't know which I found more funny, the show itself or Dave and Joel astonishment over the events in the show =)

I remember I was also disappointed with the second opening at first. It grew on me some with the time. But you have the best ending though ^^b I really like how they use the initial quiet part of Roundabout as a prelude for the ending. And since the ending always comes on some kind of cliffhanger, it just makes all the better.

Yep. Seen them. Though I found the spinning hat to be more funny, to be honest. And also Jonathan and Dio falling down the chimney for like 5 minutes straight. Don't know why, that was just funny.
The opening is growing on me for sure but it's still not on the level of the first one.
The ending is good, not denying that.

A new and stronger Dio meme will surface in part 3.
