I'm actually supposed to be a developer here, but I guess moderator permissions are just included with the package.

As a developer, you would probably need many other permissions. What are the actual permissions that you need?

I'm not sure yet.
But if I get an exact copy of this forum running locally (minus the database credentials), I don't see why I should have more permissions here.

Well, you don't want to be a moderator then?
We don't take more than 10 staff here. So we are hoping everyone would share the work

I'm not saying whether I want to or not, though fact is that it adds extra responsibilities unrelated to development.
Though on the other hand it makes it easier to test things on the production side too (like how I sometimes tend to find bugs on the production side of a site and not on the development one).

Working copy of the site? How do you get one? Are you talking about admincp?

I don't have a copy yet.
MyBB is open source software, so I can technically just go ahead and download it myself.
But then I get the problem of not knowing which themes and plugins this site has.
And I might also have a difference in versions in case this site or and of the plugins are running an older versions.

I don't have anything like that. So I can't become a moderator
