Will one piece can ever become the most popular anime?

Yes, it's not as popular as Dragon Ball or Naruto, but it's still more popular than any other short anime out there, be it Attack on Titan or Cowboy Bebop. Heck, everybody was talking about that debacle of a live-action film that Netflix released lasy year.

I am not saying it isn't popular, it is just that it is really hard to say that one show is THE most popular one. I am absolutely certain that even in the US any cartoon that had been airing on popular kids channels (like DB, Pokemon, Naruto, Sailor Moon, etc.) would be way more recognizable than any other mainstream anime. Same is true for every country. Pokemon is probably the most recognized anime world wide, I'd guess, easily dwarfing the entire fan bases of Death Note, Attack on Titan and other such.

Even if you want to talk about popularity among anime fans, like people who have seen at least X other anime series, even then I don't think Death Note would necessarily come on top. MAL really is biased towards relatively young hardcore fans, and it poorly represents fans who don't speak English. There are shows like FMA, Evangelion, Hellsing, etc., they have huge international following, but it doesn't necessarily translate into an info buzz in the english internet. I am sure Death Note is among the top, but I am not really a big fan of taking MAL list as the ultimate judgement tool =)

I guess I have to clarify. I am not actually arguing for or against some anime being the most popular, I am rather saying that we have no way of even determining which series deserves such title. Whenever we try to do it objectively, we just construct the rules that determine which title will float to the top. So in the end it is not really a question about some inherent properties of anime series, it is a question of what rules we pick, which kinda defeats the purpose of asking whether or not One Piece or any other anime will ever make it to the very top. Just pick convenient rules and it will get there : D

Even so, I agree with only a fraction of anime fans having Mal accounts.
I don't have one either.
I didn't know that Manga is in 4 th place. I assumed it's in first place

Right, not the hundred million of them though : D

#1 would be Naruto =) Attack on Titan and Bleach are taking the second and the third places.

I see. I never expected bleach of all anime to get the third place. I expected it's number to be at least in double digits.

You misunderstood me there. I was talking about relatively short anime. Of course, Death Note is a far-cry from Naruto or Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon in terms of popularity. I won't include Pokemon because it's the games that serve as the primary form of entertainment.
But, it is undoubtedly more popular than any short anime out there. People who don't see anime would have at least heard of Death Note or watched it. And, it's not surprising really, because unlike say Cowboy Bebop, Death Note's plot is both catchy, and you get immediately hooked in the first episode, plus as a concept, it's great, and sort of... pop.
That's also why both Attack on Titan and One Punch Man broke out into the main stream, it's because of a very cool concept. And, something shitty like SAO too, to some extent.

I have heard that manga's popularity decreased after the ending and many people didn't like how Kubo made Ichigo almost invincible.
So I expected it's popularity to decrease drastically

Sure people people can forget about it but these are quantified numbers and no one's going to remove it from their list so it's going to safely remain at least in the top 10.

If it is that popular, I wonder why anime would never be back.
I hope it would be back

No, I got you, I was just trying to talk about how arbitrary these rules are. Short is a relative term, original seasons of Sailor Moon and Pokemon aren't really that long (46 episodes for Sailor Moon, right?). Of course they got sequels which fueled their popularity; but then we go into this weird territory where we have to draw completely arbitrary lines, trying to exclude shows like Naruto, Pokemon and DB without excluding FMA, JoJo and others. I mean sure, if you compare Death Note to anime with no more than 24 episodes it would have great advantage, but that it feels way too specific =)

I have yet to see a single person who is not interested in anime but has heard of Death Note =) If I was to rank shows (less than or equal to DN in length Tongue) by being recognizable among non anime fans, then I would rather bet on My Neighbor Totoro or something else that has seen a fair amount of mainstream media attention. One Punch Man is probably a safe bet too, thanks to all the memes and such. I am not saying non anime fans actually watch any of that, cause why would they, I am only talking about the recognition.

By the way, over here Pokemon anime had actually been better known than the game, at least prior to the Pokemon Go which made it into all the news. Doesn't matter though, it is just a super popular franchise; I am fairly confident I can talk to a random stranger in just about any country and they will know the word.

And I really do get what you are saying; the best way to argue against my position is to ask me to provide any kind of anime that would be a fair competitor with Death Note (in terms of length and such) and has a shot at being "more popular". I would have hard time doing so, which proves your position.

Probably because while it is #3 in popularity it is also #2043 in rankings xD Kinda a bad result if you ask me.

I wonder if you would want to watch the adaptation of the last Bleach arc : D It is not bad, but not that great either. There are great moments there for sure, but it is also very long... I dunno. A lot of my fav characters play roles in the arc, a lot of epic defeats for seemingly invincible good guys, not too much of Ichigo (he is great and all, but everything is good in moderation). If they managed to get a great new score for the new arc it would have been cool. I don't think it will ever be animated though.

Yeah but no one knows how the popularity works. People tend to change their opinions quite easily these days. Last arc is your favorite? That's a bit surprising but I can see why Smile
