Anime review: Mahotsukai no yome + OVA

One of the most hyped up shows from 2 seasons back, not just by the community but by me personally because I like everyone else watched the 3 prequel OVAs which were truly amazing in story telling, artwork, sound, and the sense of wonder and magic you feel when you watch it. It's basically a flashback story of an orphan girl (our hero Chise) who can see monsters and spirits and is scared and tries to run away from them but in the process discovers a magical library in the forest where she can find refuge and comfort under the care of the librarian along with other docile magical creatures. The story of the OVA actually has nothing to do with the anime and so can be watched before or after the anime. Considering how much I liked the OVA I went into the anime brimming with expectations.

Now for the anime where all my expectations slowly turned into sadness. The show has NONE of the vibe of the OVA which contrasted the bright cheery side of the magical world with the dark scary side really well. The anime is pretty much all happy go lucky, with Chise meeting humans, dragons, fairies, sorcerers etc after being taken in my Elias and learning about the magical world through some loosely connected short stories.
Somewhere in here is the origin of my main issue with the show. It's really boring. The anime is really difficult to take seriously most of the time which just negates the drama aspects which is one major reason why it felt really painful to finish. Some of the side stories are just cheesy romances with a supernatural twist. The relationship of the 2 main characters is a very weird one since it's basically some sort of pedophillia/necrophillia but it's they managed to normalize it enough to forget about it after a few episodes. But if this is supposed to be a romance that part also feels very bland and just unnatural and the anime as a whole feels very pretentious as if it's a lot deeper, meaningful and emotional than it really is. The character development while being there for Chise is close to  zero for the rest of the cast. No I don't count Elias learning a few human feelings as development.
The main antagonist in the show is kind of decent and only when he shows up did I feel the show to be worth watching.

Conclusion, I would give the anime a skip unless it's REALLY your cup of tea kind of show. I would fully recommend people to just watch the OVA even though you would probably be left wanting more. I also think it's a travesty the OVA has a lower score than the anime on MAL like wtf.

This is the AMV that made me watch the show....

I felt whatever you said about it being boring in like the third episode and put it on-hold, but now that it's confirmed, I guess I'll drop this anime for good and maybe watch the OVA in the future.
