So, I was just thinking. Why would pirates be combined with Japanese names, words, and even the culture? I've read some articles on One Piece and the character's names are confusing too me. I'm not really into anime, but after seeing that pirates are in anime, I'm sure to get the series and episodes now.

But, yes. Why do you think they combined pirates with Japanese culture, names, etc.?

You don't know anything about one piece Grin
According to this anime, pirates are the "free birds" who can do whatever they want and whenever they want Grin

I am not too sure why pirates are in One Piece. It totally works though, I couldn't imagine it any other way. Luffy being anything other than a pirate would be crazy.

I agree. The Pirates represent much more than just the traditional pirate you may be thinking of. The idea of them being "free birds" is really how they were during Medieval Times and the Golden Age anyway. And yes, Japan sponsored many pirates. The power they had at sea allowed them to essentially do whatever they wanted. If you know history, I think including pirates is appropriate in this context.

I am not sure about how Pirates are related to Japanese culture
But one thing I can say that Oda, in his childhood wanted to become a mangaka and write manga on pirates.
He was inspired by a series "the Vikings" which included pirates....

Quote:Undeniably, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's work (notably, Dragon Ball) and aspired to become a manga artist. He also mentioned that his interest in pirates was sparked by the popular TV animation series called "Vicky the Viking".
The above is a quote I took from this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

But I doubt that it has anything to do with One Piece. This anime is not related to or inspired from historical facts.
